Sunshine And Rainbows

Saturday morning, McKenna parked her car in Jeremy’s driveway and went to the front door.

Before she could ring the bell, he was opening the door for her.

“Don’t you look all sunshine and rainbows,” he said.

“Huh?” she asked.

“You. You’re in a bright orange shirt with tan shorts and colorful sandals on your feet. But aside from that it’s the smile on your face.”

“I’m happy,” she said. She wasn’t sure why other than she was positive that Molly was going to show up because she checked in with her sister to make sure.

Molly gave her a sarcastic reply she’d be there and didn’t understand why she was being doubted.

McKenna wanted to list all the times she’d been lied to but told herself it wasn’t worth it.

“Why is that?” he asked, pulling her in and wrapping her up in a hug. Her overnight bag was on her shoulder and she slid it off and let it fall to the ground.

“Because I’m having a day away with a guy that I’ve got the hots for. We are going to have fun because I told myself I’m not going to stress or worry about anything. Molly will show up at my father’s because I checked.” And she had her fingers and toes crossed.

He gave her a kiss and rubbed his hand up and down her back. “I’m sure she wasn’t thrilled you did that?”

“No,” she said. “She wasn’t. But I won’t be able to relax if I’m worried she won’t show up.”

“You talked to your father too, I’m assuming,” he said.

“I did. He said not to worry and to have a good time. Did you check in on him?” she asked.

It was the look in his eyes when she moved back.

“I did. I texted him and asked how he was doing. I knew you’d be worried and wanted to be able to tell you he was good and he knows to reach out to me if he’s not.”

She couldn’t get annoyed over that. If anything, she was more touched that Jeremy tried to make sure she could enjoy her day too.

“Thank you for that,” she said. “You don’t need to get in the middle of my family drama, but I appreciate you trying.”

“I wasn’t getting in the middle of it. It was more that I wanted to have a nice relaxing day for us too. This relieved both of our minds. If you’re relaxed, then I’m relaxed.”

“I’m sorry about that,” she said. Talk about feeling like crap.

“Don’t be. Do you want to bring your stuff upstairs?”

“I can do that,” she said. “Then we can leave whenever you want.”

It was a little before ten now. They were going to get there by eleven, get some lunch, go on a little boat tour and then walk around the village of Lake George for the day.

She hadn’t been there since she was a kid. She didn’t think all that much changed either, but it’d be fun to get out of town and it’s not like it was that far away.
